Biography

Craig Steinback is a Professor and Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta. He completed his PhD in Kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario in 2010, where his thesis focused on autonomic regulation and chemoreflex stress. His research investigates how the body responds and adapts to environments and activities under conditions of reduced oxygen availability. His primary focus is on the sympathetic nervous system's activation in response to low oxygen levels and its role in controlling blood flow to critical organs and tissues. Steinback's lab conducts ongoing studies related to hypoxia and its physiological effects on blood pressure control, particularly in clinical populations such as those with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. His research is funded by multiple organizations including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. He currently supervises graduate students and welcomes applications for graduate supervision.
