Biography

Craig Steinback is a Professor and Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta. He obtained his PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario in 2010, focusing on autonomic regulation and chemoreflex stress. His research interests broadly encompass how the body responds and adapts to conditions associated with reduced oxygen availability. Specifically, Dr. Steinback investigates how sympathetic nervous system activation in response to low oxygen levels controls blood flow to critical organs and tissues. He studies the neural cardiovascular responses to both acute and chronic hypoxia, emphasizing the mechanisms activated during periods of reduced oxygen. His lab conducts collaborative research on the role of the carotid body in hypertension among various clinical populations, including patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and preeclampsia. Dr. Steinback is dedicated to supervising graduate students and promoting undergraduate research opportunities, making significant contributions to the field of exercise physiology, particularly in understanding blood pressure regulation in clinical contexts. His ongoing research is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and other research institutions.
