Cristina Al-Khalili Szigyarto is a professor specializing in pre-clinical proteomics at the Department of Protein Science at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She obtained her Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry at Stockholm University, focusing on intracellular proteolytic events. Prior to her appointment at KTH, she was awarded a fellowship by the Swedish Research Council to pursue postdoctoral research at Amsterdam University, concentrating on gene regulation and gene expression analysis. At KTH, she was integral to the initiation of the Human Protein Atlas project, which is pivotal in developing and producing antigens validated by antibodies for proteomics studies. Over the last decade, her research has centered on the development of biomarkers for patient-specific disease models that assist in the clinical management of life-threatening disorders caused by single-gene mutations. She collaborates with geneticists, pediatricians, neurologists, patient organizations, and pharmaceutical companies to identify biomarkers that monitor disease progression and treatment outcomes. Furthermore, she is involved in creating patient-specific cell models aimed at testing future therapies and developing personalized treatment regimes. Currently, she serves as a member of the CBH school faculty board and the National SciLifelab Committee, and she acts as an advisor for the Duchenne Regulatory Science Consortium.
