Biography

Cristina Nan is an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) within the Unit of Architectural Design Engineering (ADE) in the Department of the Built Environment. Her research focuses on emerging technologies in computational design, digital fabrication, and automation, particularly architectural robotics and material experimentation. She emphasizes the importance of both algorithm-aided and conventional craftsmanship in the design process, highlighting a symbiotic relationship between digital and non-digital fabrication methods. Key areas of her research include 3D clay printing, 3D concrete printing, form optimization, digital materiality, and material circularity. Her work investigates the socio-economic and environmental implications of automation and ICT within market-driven models, addressing the impact of spatial formulation on architecture and construction. Cristina earned her PhD with honors (magna cum laude) from HafenCity University Hamburg in 2015, and previously worked for architectural firms in Germany. She has held prior academic roles at the University of Edinburgh and co-founded the Future Fields Think Tank in 2019. Cristina’s work has been exhibited in various prestigious venues including the Venice Architecture Biennial 2023 and the London Design Fair.
