Biography

Tina Romero is a Lecturer at Columbia Law School and serves as the Assistant Attorney-in-Charge of the Juvenile Rights Project Immigration Team at the Legal Aid Society. Her work focuses on providing direction and representation for immigrant clients entangled in the family regulation system. Tina is also a member of the Steering Committee for the EndSIJSBacklog Coalition, a national advocacy group aimed at securing immediate permanency for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) youth. Additionally, she serves on the Immigration Advisory Group for the Permanent Commission on Justice for Families and coordinates the New York City SIJS Advocates group. From 2009 to 2025, Tina provided direct representation for immigrant youth and consulted on immigration issues at the Legal Aid Society. She was part of the teams that successfully litigated the significant class action lawsuit R.F.M. v. Nielsen, and its companion case Zabaleta v. Nielsen. In 2014, she initiated the Immigrant Youth Advocacy Externship at Columbia Law School and contributed to the formation of the ICARE coalition to ensure unaccompanied youth in New York City receive representation in immigration court. Tina earned her undergraduate degree magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 2001 and her Juris Doctor from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 2005, and she is admitted to practice in New York and Illinois.
