Biography

Cybelle Fox is a Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research primarily focuses on race, immigration, and the American welfare state. She authored the book, "Worlds Relief" (Princeton University Press, 2012), which compares the incorporation of Black Americans, Mexicans, and European immigrants into the American welfare system during the Progressive Era and the New Deal. Fox has received six book awards for "Worlds Relief," including the 2012 C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Currently, she is working on another book under contract with Princeton University Press that examines the rise of immigrant status restrictions in American social welfare policy from 1935 to 1994. Her scholarly articles have been published in various journals, including the American Behavioral Scientist, American Journal of Sociology, and Social Forces, among others.
