Biography

Cynthia Bradham is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Boston University. Her current research focuses on understanding the processes of secondary (dorsal-ventral) axis specification and skeletal patterning in sea urchins. These non-chordate deuterostomes serve as an ideal model organism for systems-level developmental studies. Through genomic analysis, her work has revealed that sea urchins share a diversity of signaling and transcriptional molecules with vertebrates, including humans, but lack the complexity often associated with a duplicated genome. Bradham's studies highlight the morphological simplicity of sea urchin larvae, composed of only 15 cell types, which allows for detailed analysis of cell specification and cell-cell communication mechanisms. In her lab, she employs a combination of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, computational modeling, and systems biology approaches to better understand how dorsal-ventral axis specification and larval skeleton patterning are achieved. Her dedication to pioneering research in this area continues to provide insights into developmental biology.
