Biography

Cynthia Brewer is a Professor of Geography at Penn State University and an Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Information Sciences and Technology. She is a member of the Penn State faculty since 1994, specializing in cartographic design and has a rich portfolio of research and teaching. Brewer has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and more than 60 additional publications and resources on cartographic design, which have generated more than 7,000 citations. Her notable works include the popular book 'Designing Maps,' now in its third edition published by Esri Press in 2024. Brewer’s contributions to the field of cartography have been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Carl Mannerfelt Gold Medal from the International Cartographic Association in 2023 and the O. M. Miller Cartographic Medal from the American Geographical Society in 2019. She is particularly known for developing the ColorBrewer online tool, which assists in selecting map color schemes. Brewer's research interests are deeply rooted in cartographic communication, visualization, map design, color theory, multi-scale mapping, and atlas production.
