Biography

Cynthia Thickpenny joined the Edinburgh College of Art as a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow in September 2021. Her project, ‘The Transmutation Patterns Role of Women in Insular Art’, focuses on how complex ornamental forms found in Insular art (early medieval Ireland and Britain, c. AD 600-1100) were transformed by female artists. Cynthia's research spans a variety of media, including manuscript illumination, carved stone, metalwork, and textiles, with a particular interest in the contributions of women textile makers in this period. She earned her PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2019, exploring the role of key patterns in Insular art and their manipulation by artists to serve creative purposes. Her award-winning article in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland received the RBK Stevenson Award. In addition, Cynthia edited a published volume from the Eighth International Conference on Insular art. Her research emphasizes the collaborative practices of Insular artists, revealing nuanced interactions among male and female creators. Currently, she is expanding methodologies in ornament studies, emphasizing the need for close examination of individual artworks to understand their underlying structures.
