Biography

Cyril Grueter is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Oxford, where he serves as a Tutorial Fellow at Wadham College. He is also the Executive Director of the International Centre for Biodiversity and Primate Conservation at Dali University in China, and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Rwanda. Grueter earned his PhD from the University of Zurich, which involved a 20-month field study on snub-nosed monkeys. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, during which he conducted 18 months of fieldwork on mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Prior to joining Oxford, he was a faculty member at the University of Western Australia, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2023 and held a Visiting Scholar appointment at Harvard University. His research focuses on the intersection of behavioral ecology and evolutionary anthropology, specifically the evolution of primate and human sociality, intergroup tolerance in multilevel societies, and adaptations of primates in ecologically extreme environments. Grueter has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals and has contributed to significant media projects as a scientific advisor.
