Cyrus Cooper is a Professor of Musculoskeletal Science at the University of Oxford and Director of the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit. He graduated from the University of Cambridge and St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, in 1980 and completed his residency at Southampton University Hospitals in 1985. In 1990, he won the MRC Travelling Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, USA, to continue his research on osteoporosis and returned to the UK in 1992 to take a position as a Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology and MRC Senior Clinical Scientist. He was promoted to the foundation Chair in Rheumatology at the University of Southampton in 1997 while continuing as an MRC Senior Clinical Scientist. In 2003, he became the Director of the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre at Southampton. Cooper leads a competitive research program in the epidemiology of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly osteoporosis, and has made key contributions to the understanding of developmental influences on osteoporosis risk in later life. He has held several prominent roles in professional organizations and has published extensively, with over 750 research papers in the fields of osteoporosis and rheumatic disorders. In 2015, he was awarded OBE for his services to medical research.
