Biography

D. Flemming Hansen completed his PhD in biophysical protein chemistry at the University of Copenhagen in 2005, after which he joined the NMR group led by Professor Lewis E. Kay at the University of Toronto for postdoctoral training. His principal research focus during this time was the development of NMR methodology to study protein dynamics and to develop methods for characterizing thermally excited low populated states of proteins. These excited states play crucial roles in processes such as ligand binding, molecular recognition, enzyme catalysis, and protein folding; however, they often remain undetected by traditional structural biology techniques. Hansen has applied novel NMR relaxation dispersion experiments to reveal the structures and dynamics of protein folding intermediates and low populated states with lifetimes ranging from 0.5 to 10 ms. In October 2010, he joined the ISMB as a BBSRC David Phillips fellow and is currently affiliated with University College London in the Department of Structural and Molecular Biology while also holding a principal group leader position at the Francis Crick Institute.
