Biography

D. Keegan is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan, having joined the Department in 1971 and serving for 33 years. Over his tenure, he held multiple leadership roles including Department Head from 1983 to 1994 and Joint Head of the Psychiatry Departments at the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Health Region from 2003 to 2004. Dr. Keegan specialized in early diagnosis and treatment rehabilitation of patients with psychosis and the interface of Psychiatry and Medicine, particularly Psychosomatic Medicine. He developed the Early Intervention Program for Psychosis and published 69 papers in refereed journals between 1999 and 2004. After retirement, Dr. Keegan continued to be active in the Department of Psychiatry, promoting research and quality shared care. He also works part-time in a family practice clinic, focusing on shared psychiatric care. His contributions to the field have been recognized through various national and international awards, including the National Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Mental Health Association in 1990 and the Distinguished Life Fellow title from the American Psychiatric Association in 2003.
