Biography

Daan van Uhm is an Associate Professor of Criminology at Utrecht University, where he holds the chair in Environmental Crime. He has significantly contributed to the academic understanding of environmental crimes, particularly in the areas of illegal mining in Latin America, wildlife trafficking in Southeast Asia, and deforestation in Central Africa. He completed his PhD in Criminology at Utrecht University in 2016, focusing on the illegal wildlife trade, which was published by Springer. Among his research accolades, he received a Veni grant from the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for his project on the diversification of organized crime relating to the illegal trade of natural resources. He was awarded the ERC Starting Grant in 2022 for his research on Green Crimes and Joint Crime Ventures centered on laundering natural resources. His work is integral to the collaboration with the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR).
