Biography

Dalton Conley is the Henry Putnam University Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Interim Director of the Office Population Research at Princeton University. His research focuses primarily on the intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic and health status from parents to children. This area of study includes examining the impact of parental wealth on explaining racial attainment gaps and investigating the causal impact of birthweight as a heuristic for understanding health and educational outcomes. He also explores sibling differences as they relate to achievement ascription and within-family stratification processes, and he studies genetics as a driver of social mobility and reproduction. In addition to his university role, Conley serves as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He has earned multiple degrees, including a Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Biology from New York University in 2014. He has authored several books and has received numerous fellowships and awards, including recognition from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Science Foundation. Conley is also an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
