Biography

Damani J. Partridge is a Professor of Anthropology and Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on citizenship, noncitizen politics, urban futures, decoloniality, and the politics of Blackness in the context of migration and governance. Partridge has published widely on the intersection of citizenship and anti-citizenship, as well as on the cultural and political implications of Blackness in the modern world. His notable works include 'Hypersexuality and Headscarves: Race, Sex, Citizenship in New Germany' published in 2012, and a more recent book, 'Blackness as a Universal Claim: Holocaust Heritage, Noncitizen Politics, Black Power in Berlin,' published by the University of California Press in 2023. He is currently directing the Filming Future Cities Project, which focuses on Detroit and Berlin.
