Biography

Damian Caluori is a Senior Lecturer and the Undergraduate Teaching Director at the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology, and Language Sciences. He joined the department in 2019 and has previously taught for ten years at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, serving as both Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. Caluori received his DPhil from the University of Oxford in 2008, focusing on Plotinus and his theories on the soul, under the supervision of Michael Frede. His academic interests center on ancient philosophy, particularly late ancient Platonism, where he seeks to address the philosophical challenges posed by previous thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle. His current research involves the translation and commentary of the Enneads, specifically sections II.6 and VI.1 to VI.2, along with ongoing work on his monograph 'Plotinus on the Soul,' which systematically explores the theories and implications of Plotinus' perspectives on the human soul in relation to broader metaphysical theories. Caluori also engages with topics in Hellenistic philosophy and Neoplatonism.
