Biography

Damian Castro is a faculty member at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, specializing in Anthropology. His research interests primarily focus on Arctic ontologies and the relationship between humans and the caribou. His recent publications include groundbreaking work on the social economy of northern communities and the cooperative food-sharing practices among indigenous populations, emphasizing sustainable hunting practices. Castro's film work includes a documentary titled 'Atiku Napeu,' which highlights the Innu respect for caribou and their traditional practices. He has also been involved in significant research projects funded by grants from the Canadian Wildlife Service and ISER, exploring non-monetary economies associated with hunting practices in Newfoundland and Labrador.
