Biography

Damian Tyler is a Professor of Physiological Metabolism and currently serves as the Director of MR Physics at the Oxford Centre for Clinical Magnetic Resonance Research (OCMR). Based at the University of Oxford for over 20 years, he has extensive experience in the development and application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Spectroscopy (MRS). Tyler completed his MSci in Medical Physics in 1998 and earned his doctorate in 2001 from the University of Nottingham. He is an associate member of the Cardiac Metabolism Research Group (CMRG) and leads the Oxford Metabolic Imaging Group, where his research focuses on studying cardiac structure, function, and metabolism in both normal and diseased hearts using MRI/MRS. His work includes developing high spatial and temporal resolution CINE imaging techniques to assess heart function and localized phosphorus and carbon spectroscopy to monitor and investigate metabolic abnormalities. Awarded British Heart Foundation Intermediate and Senior Research Fellowships, he has pioneered techniques involving Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) to enhance the sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging. This innovation has made significant strides in visualizing 13C-labelled cellular metabolites in vivo, providing insights into enzymatic transformations of species and revolutionizing MR spectroscopy.
