Damir Brdjanovic is a Full Professor of Sanitary Engineering at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and an Endowed Professor at Delft University of Technology since 2009. His areas of expertise include wastewater treatment, urban drainage, pro-poor emergency sanitation, and faecal sludge management. He is a pioneer in the practical application of models in wastewater treatment practices in developing countries and is well-known for inventing the Shit Killer® device for excreta management during emergencies and the award-winning eSOS Smart Toilet® along with its associated software eSOS Monitor®. With substantial funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), he has obtained major research education grants exceeding USD 25 million. Furthermore, Brdjanovic has been instrumental in developing innovative didactic approaches and novel educational products including e-learning at IHE Delft. In 2015, he co-founded the Global Sanitation Learning Alliance with BMGF and founded the Global Partnership Laboratories for Faecal Sludge Analyses in 2017. He currently leads a group at IHE Delft comprising ten staff members, several post-doctoral fellows, and about 15 PhD students. Under his supervision, over 100 MSc students have graduated. Brdjanovic has a significant publication record, including contributions to the journal Science, and has authored and edited six books in the field of wastewater treatment and sanitation. In 2015, he was recognized as a Fellow of the International Water Association.
