Damla Tamer is a visual artist and educator based in unceded Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territories (Vancouver, Canada). Born in 1986 in Istanbul, Turkey, she holds an MFA from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a BFA from Sabanci University. Her artistic practice engages closely with craft, particularly weaving textile techniques, alongside experimental mark making and spoken performances that involve collaborative social work. Tamer's works explore the affective conditions of labor in late capitalism and the evolving forms of civil protest within the contemporary political landscape of Turkey. She is particularly interested in modes of agency and creating causal structures that allow for new organizations of space and time, emphasizing actions of hospitality, solidarity, and forgiveness in her representations. Tamer has had solo exhibitions at Darling Foundry in Montreal and Fifty Arts Collective in Victoria, and participated in various artist-in-residence programs internationally, most recently at Stundars Museum in Finland. She is a founding member of the artist collective A.M. (Art Mamas), which seeks to create support networks for artist caregivers while critically exploring motherhood within the context of art production. Additionally, she has contributed to grassroots artist-run organizations and co-founded the Inter-co-op Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Platform to promote equitable access in co-operative housing.
