Dan Cavanagh is a composer and pianist who has garnered numerous awards in the field of music. In 2023, he was awarded the Social Justice Prize for his composition for Wind Ensemble, securing the 2nd Prize at the American Prize in the Composition Wind Symphony/Band Category. He previously won a gold medal at the International Music Prize for Excellence in Composition in 2009 and received a Special Judges’ Citation at the American Prize in Chamber Music Composition in 2017. Cavanagh has composed works that have been commissioned by the Latin Grammy-winning AfroBop Alliance and performed by iconic artists such as Patti LaBelle. He has released five jazz recordings as a leader under Seattle’s OA2 Records and collaborated with Minnesota-based vibraphonist Dave Hagedorn. His music has received critical acclaim, with his recent album featuring James Miley and John Hollenbeck released in November 2022. Cavanagh's compositions have been performed worldwide, and his film scoring work can be heard in the documentary 'Beat Hotel.' He continues to compose for wind symphonies and jazz big bands, with many works published by reputable music presses. In addition to his composing, Cavanagh has performed extensively across North America and Europe, sharing the stage with Grammy-winning musicians. He holds a Ph.D. in Creative Arts from the University of Tasmania and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Oregon, along with a Bachelor of Music from St. Olaf College.
