Dr. Dan Dipiero

Biography

Dan DiPiero is an Assistant Professor of Music at Boston University, specializing in Musicology and Ethnomusicology. His research interests include the emotional and aesthetic connections in U.S. improvised popular music, with a strong emphasis on feminist indie rock. He is the author of "Big Feelings: Queer Feminist Indie Rock Riot Grrrl" and has published another book titled "Contingent Encounters: Improvisation in Music Everyday Life," which explores the significance of improvisation in various contexts. This book was a finalist for the International Association for the Study of Popular Music Book Prize in 2023. Dan co-edited a special issue of the journal American Music Perspectives focused on sound and affect published in early 2023. He has a wide range of teaching experience across several institutions including the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has taught interdisciplinary courses in musicology. His educational background includes a PhD in Comparative Studies from Ohio State University and multiple degrees from the California Institute of the Arts and Capital University. Dan also actively participates in various academic groups and regularly presents his research at significant conferences.
