Dan Erwin earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1986. He also holds a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the same institution, obtained in 1983, and a Bachelor's degree in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology, achieved in 1981. His research focuses on spacecraft propulsion, optics, optical instruments, kinetics, gases, and plasmas. Over the years, he has received various awards for his contributions to engineering education and teaching excellence, including the Engineers' Council Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Award in 2017, the Engineers' Council Distinguished Engineering Educator Award in 2016, and the USC-LDS Student Association Outstanding Teaching Award in 2006. He has also been recognized with the USC School of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award in 1995 and the TRW, Inc. TRW Excellence Teaching Award in 1993. Currently, he serves as the Department Chair of Astronautical Engineering at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering.
