Biography

Dr. Dan Henhawk's research interests revolve around multiple conceptualizations of leisure and the socio-cultural study of sport and recreation. A main thread of his research seeks to trouble modern Western conceptualizations of leisure and the notions of work through a critical Indigenous lens. His work strives to privilege Indigenous ways of knowing the world. Dr. Henhawk aims to explore and understand the meanings of leisure and the changing perceptions of work. He is interested in Indigenous notions of decolonization, indigenization, sovereignty, and self-determination. In his studies, Dr. Henhawk has examined sport in an Indigenous context and has engaged in auto-ethnographical research related to the experiences of Indigenous individuals participating in modern competitive sport.
