Dan Lewis’ research agenda provides an approach to studying social policy that meets the challenge of profound transformation in social policy over the last 40 years. Gone are the days when new federal programs were seen as solutions to national problems; the New Deal and Great Society are now viewed more as sources of problems than solutions. Lewis’ work responds to these changes in the political climate. Along with numerous articles, he has authored or edited seven books, including 'Gaining Ground Illinois: Welfare Reform Person-Centered Policy Analysis' (2010). He directed major program projects with the Institute for Policy Research, focusing on community reactions to crime and deinstitutionalization of state mental health patients, and has conducted evaluations of homelessness issues in Chicago suburbs. Lewis also directs the Center for Civic Engagement, which encourages students to enhance their academic experiences through voluntary service and research aimed at building better communities. He has served on nonprofit boards and civic committees and was the director of undergraduate education in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University.
