Biography

Dan Luo is a Professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. He earned his Doctorate from Ohio State University in 1997 and his Bachelor of Science from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1989. His research focuses on the role of nucleic acids in living organisms, particularly their function as carriers of genetic information. His lab is known for innovative work in developing DNA-based materials, including true polymers, tree-shaped DNA, gels, and DNA-nanoparticle hybrid assemblies. Professor Luo’s group is exploring the real-world applications of these novel DNA materials in areas such as diagnostics, pharmaceutics, protein production, drug delivery, cell culture, and optoelectronics. In addition to his research, he emphasizes active learning in teaching and has developed courses that integrate biotechnology and nanotechnology, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges. He has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Cornell Outstanding Educator award and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering's Outstanding Accomplishments in Basic Research award.
