Biography

Dan Olteanu studied Computer Science at Politehnica University of Bucharest and obtained his PhD from Ludwig Maximilian University in 2005. He has served as a postdoctoral assistant at the University of Saarland and a visiting scientist at Cornell University. Later, he took a role as a university lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and became a fellow of St Cross College. By 2016, he was appointed full professor at Oxford. Dan Olteanu has held visiting positions such as associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley and a Turing fellow at the Alan Turing Institute in London. Since 2020, he has been a full professor in the Department of Informatics at the University of Zurich, leading the Data Systems Theory group. He continues his affiliation as a visiting professor at Oxford and an emeritus fellow at St Cross College. His research interests focus on computational challenges in data processing, aiming to design simple and scalable solutions. Throughout his career, he has published extensively in the fields of database systems and theory, AI, and has contributed to areas such as XML query processing and probabilistic databases. He has received numerous awards including the International Conference Database Theory 2019 paper award and the ACM SIGMOD 2018 Distinguished PC member award.
