Professor Dan Palermo serves as the Deputy Provost Markham and specializes in Structural Engineering within the Department of Civil Engineering. Prior to his tenure at York University, he was a faculty member at the University of Ottawa from 2005 to 2013 and the University of Calgary in 2004. Dr. Palermo also holds the position of Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering (CJCE). His research interests encompass a variety of innovative and critical areas, including seismic repair and retrofit of concrete structures, the seismic applications of shape memory alloys, and innovative masonry wall structures. Furthermore, he focuses on the characterization of Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHP-FRC) and Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC), as well as conducting nonlinear finite element analysis on reinforced concrete structures. In addition, he engages in research related to tsunami-induced loading on structures. In 2018, Dr. Palermo received the York University President’s University-Wide Teaching Award and was distinguished as a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.
