Biography

Dan Slater is the James Orin Murfin Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan and serves as the Director of the Center for Emerging Democracies. He focuses on the historical patterns of contentious politics and the variation in state power and authoritarian durability, especially in Southeast Asia. Slater came to Michigan in 2017 after twelve years on the faculty at the University of Chicago, where he was the founding Director of the Center for International Social Science Research and an Associate Professor of Political Science, with an associate role in Sociology. He authored the book 'Ordering Power: Contentious Politics in Southeast Asia' and is currently working on 'Development and Democracy: Transformations in Modern Asia'. His research has been published in prominent journals, and he engages in international consulting related to democratization. Slater holds a Ph.D. from Emory University and received his B.A. in International Relations and History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by an M.A. in International Studies from the University of Washington's Jackson School.
