Biography

Dan Small is a medical anthropologist and research associate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. He holds a PhD in medical anthropology from the University of British Columbia, an MPhil in circumpolar studies from the University of Cambridge, and undergraduate degrees in sociology and anthropology and psychology, both with first-class honors, from Simon Fraser University. His work focuses on the development and evaluation of various initiatives aimed at supporting marginalized populations, including social enterprises in healthcare, housing, and employment. Small was instrumental in the establishment of Insite, North America's first supervised injection facility, demonstrating the intersection of cultural analysis and social issues in health care. He has been involved in medical regulation and assessment processes with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and the Medical Council of Canada. Small teaches courses in sociology and anthropology, exploring themes such as social inequalities, the sociology of work, and the impacts of drug use on society.
