Biography

Dan Spiegel is a Continuing Lecturer in Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and a licensed architect in California and Hawaii. He is a founding partner of SAW // Spiegel Aihara Workshop, a hybrid architecture and landscape architecture firm. The work produced by SAW engages with the productive tensions between architecture and landscape architecture, challenging conventional boundaries such as interior/exterior and synthetic/natural. SAW's innovative approach has garnered numerous accolades, including the AIA Emerging Professionals distinction in 2016, the League Prize from the Architectural League of New York in 2018, and recognition as one of Architect Magazine’s 'Next Progressives' in 2018, along with Architectural Record's 'Design Vanguard' honor in 2019. Spiegel's experience also extends to teaching, where he imparts fundamental architectural design principles and studio practices to students through various courses.
