Dr. Dana Cupkova

Biography

Dana Čupková is a Professor at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Architecture and serves as the graduate Track Chair for the Master of Science in Sustainable Design (MSSD) program. As director of the EPIPHYTE Lab, she is recognized for her progressive design practice, having received awards such as the 2019 ACADIA Teaching Award for Excellence and the 2022-23 Fulbright Scholar. Her research emphasizes the interconnectedness of architecture and landscape, focusing on themes like circularity, thermodynamics, embodied energy, and advanced manufacturing. Dana investigates remediation strategies for decarbonization using construction waste streams. She has been recognized by various prestigious organizations including the Architectural League of New York and the New York State Council on the Arts. Her design work and writings have been published internationally across notable professional venues, highlighting her contributions to contemporary ecological architecture. Dana holds an Engineer Architect degree from Slovak University of Technology, completed a diploma thesis at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and earned a Master of Architecture from UCLA. Her professional experience spans across Europe, the U.S., and Southeast Asia, where she has practiced with notable firms and held visiting professorships. She actively presents her work at various academic conferences and contributes to journals in her field.
