Biography

Dana Nickson is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Washington, specializing in educational equity, justice, leadership, and policy. Her research focuses on the diverse forms of educational spatial agency within Black families, emphasizing how these families create supportive environments for care and learning in racially and economically unjust metropolitan regions in the U.S. Drawing from her own experiences and her work with community organizations and schools, Dana is committed to understanding the multifaceted agency of Black families and its significance in expanding liberatory approaches in educational leadership. She has earned her Ph.D. in Educational Studies with a focus on Foundations of Education Policy from the University of Michigan and has also obtained her M.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania, along with a B.A. in African American Studies from Northwestern University. Additionally, she holds multiple appointments, including as an Affiliate Faculty member at the Banks Center for Educational Justice and as an Affiliate of the Community Based Research Equity, Activism, & Transformative Education Center at the University of Michigan.
