Biography

Daniel Albert is a Professor and the Founding Director of the McPherson Eye Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has extensive training and experience in ophthalmology, having completed his MD at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1962 and later obtaining an MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1997. Dr. Albert's research primarily focuses on ocular tumors, including melanoma and retinoblastoma. His innovative work involves the development of animal models for treating age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and dry eye syndrome. He has utilized transgenic mouse models to explore the molecular biology of retinoblastoma and investigate the effects of vitamin D analogs on tumor regression. From 1985 to 2003, Dr. Albert led the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study at the National Eye Institute, where he served as the head of the COMS Pathology Center. He remains actively involved in curating the specimens collected during that study. His interests also encompass medical ethics and the history of medicine within ophthalmology. In July 2016, Dr. Albert served as a Professor of Ophthalmology at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon.
