Biography

Daniel Alessi is a Professor and the Encana Chair in Water Resources at the University of Alberta, specializing in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. His research group focuses on surface chemistry and the biogeochemistry of metals cycling in water, soils, and sediments, with an emphasis on the water cycle and unconventional energy recovery. He has collaborated with various institutions both locally and internationally. His current research projects include examining the chemical behavior of pyrolytic carbon in environmental applications, evaluating the chemistry of hydraulic fracturing flowback produced waters and their links to toxicity, assessing the impacts on soil-water microbiology, extraction techniques for lithium from oilfield brines, and modeling the transport and fate of contaminants in geological media. Alessi holds a Postdoctoral degree in Environmental Microbiology from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Notre Dame, a Master’s degree in Hydrogeology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
