Biography

Daniel Anthony, a specialist in inflammatory disease, leads the Experimental Neuropathology Laboratory at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow at Somerville College and holds an honorary professorship at the University of Southern Denmark. His research focuses on the role of systemic inflammation in influencing outcomes of acute and chronic brain injuries and infections, as well as the contribution of circulating extracellular vesicles to the pathogenesis of central nervous system diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders. Daniel's academic journey began with a Ph.D. from University College London in 1994, after which he joined Professor Hugh Perry at Oxford under a British Biotech Fellowship to explore metalloproteinase expression in the central nervous system. His groundbreaking work has led to the identification of novel biomarkers for diagnosing diseases and predicting progression, utilizing a combination of in vivo biology, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, MRI, PET imaging, and metabolomics. After a stint as a Lecturer in Neurobiology at the University of Southampton, he returned to Oxford in 2004 and has continued to expand his research on neuroinflammation, collaborating with experts worldwide. In 2015, he was awarded a personal Chair in Experimental Neuropathology and became a Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society in 2020.
