Biography

Daniel Appelgren is an Associate Professor at Linköping University, specializing in the study of the mechanisms of the immune system's cells to understand the pathogenesis of inflammatory kidney diseases. His research focuses particularly on a group of autoimmune diseases known as ANCA-associated vasculitis. His presentation explores the analysis of the release of inflammatory properties of DNA-protein complexes that regulate inflammation through the immune system's neutrophils, T-cells, and B-cells. These diseases are leading causes of end-stage renal disease, where dialysis or transplantation is often required for survival. Appelgren's work emphasizes the high incidence of glomerulonephritis associated with ANCA, which significantly affects kidney function. The excessive production and/or inadequate removal of extracellular DNA-protein complexes are believed to contribute to the inflammation seen in autoimmune reactions and diseases. His research aims to investigate and modulate the release and removal of these structures from the immune system's cells, focusing on how B-cells regulate inflammation and identifying novel therapeutic targets and strategies for treatment. Current treatments can induce remission, but a significant percentage of patients experience relapses, indicating the need for more efficient treatments and reliable biomarkers to monitor disease activity.
