Biography

Daniel Dumouchel is a full professor at the Université de Montréal, in the Department of Philosophy within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. His research interests encompass modern philosophical thought from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a focus on aesthetics and the philosophy of art. Dumouchel's work often explores the reconstruction of major issues in 18th-century philosophical aesthetics. He examines the role of aesthetics in Kantian philosophy, expanding the analysis to encompass the Enlightenment contexts of French, English, and Scottish thought. Central to his investigations are the nature of aesthetic experience, ethical dimensions of aesthetics, the interplay of passions in artistic experience, and the epistemological implications of fiction in philosophical discourse. Additionally, he has undertaken significant projects including research at the Berlin Academy regarding speculation in philosophy during the Enlightenment. His multidisciplinary focus includes the study of affectivity in modern philosophy and the ethical implications of aesthetic experiences, drawing on historical philosophical frameworks from thinkers such as Hume, Smith, which contributes to his teaching and supervision of graduate students.
