Biography

Daniel Eakins is a professor and an experimental scientist specializing in the interface between extreme materials science and shock physics. His research focuses on ultrafast behavior of materials under extreme loading conditions, utilizing a combination of gas guns and high-power lasers to investigate key physical processes from the lattice level to bulk scale. His work primarily addresses dynamic strength and failure mechanisms in metals and ceramics, with a strong emphasis on heterogeneous systems. He is recognized for his expertise in the shock response of porous and cellular materials and is particularly focused on dynamic energy absorption and the tuning of shock-induced reactions in granular mixtures. After moving to the UK, he played a pivotal role in pioneering advanced X-ray imaging techniques to deepen the understanding of material behaviors under shock compression. He obtained his PhD in Materials Science Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2007 and was awarded the Director’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 2010, he joined Imperial College London to establish the Institute of Shock Physics, eventually serving as Deputy Director before moving to the University of Oxford.
