Biography

Daniel J. Fitzmier is an Assistant Professor of Instruction at Northwestern University’s School of Communication and the Director of the Northwestern Debate Society. He has a notable history in coaching debate, having led multiple teams to the Finals of the National Debate Tournament. His teams have achieved significant victories, including being National Debate Champions in 2015, 2011, 2005, 2003, 2002, and 2000. Fitzmier has also coached students to become NDT Top Speakers and has overseen seven teams that won the Copeland Award, which is given to the team with the top overall performance in a debate season. He has received the James J. Unger Award four times, exemplifying his outstanding contributions to the field of debate coaching, and was voted National Debate Coach of the Year in 2013. His academic focus includes contemporary debate and corporate government communication, as well as the rhetorical tradition in communication studies.
