Dr. Daniel Ghezelbash

Biography

Daniel Ghezelbash is an internationally recognized scholar in international comparative refugee migration law, currently serving as a Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he is also the Director of the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law. He holds a PhD, LLB (Hons), BA (Hons) from the University of Sydney, and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University. His research focuses on improving fairness and efficiency in Australia’s asylum procedures, supported by an Australian Research Council (ARC) DECRA Fellowship. Ghezelbash has published extensively, highlighting the implications of restrictive asylum policies and the need for equitable treatment of refugees. He has spent time as a Visiting Fellow at the Refugee Studies Centre at the University of Oxford and as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School. As a practicing refugee lawyer and Special Counsel at the National Justice Project, he advocates for systemic reform and access to justice, founding initiatives like Wallumatta Legal, which offers low-cost legal services. Through the Kaldor Centre Data Lab, he pioneers the application of data and legal technology to enhance judicial decision-making processes in refugee cases, earning recognition as one of Australia's leading experts in legal technology and generative AI.
