Generate a tailored SOP for Dr. Daniel Goncalves Carneiro. Improve your application with a focused, well-structured draft.
Daniel Gonçalves-Carneiro graduated from the University of Porto, Portugal, with an integrated master's in Bioengineering. He received his PhD from the University of Birmingham, UK, focusing on measles virus infection under the guidance of Dr. Dalan Bailey. Following this, Daniel moved to Rockefeller University, New York, to join Professor Paul Bieniasz's lab, where he studied RNA viruses and the zinc finger antiviral protein (ZAP), which inhibits virus replication. His research demonstrated that human ZAP specifically recognizes CpG dinucleotides in viral RNA and that zinc finger antiviral proteins in different species of birds have distinct binding preferences. Currently, Daniel is part of the Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London, where he investigates how synonymous mutations in viral genomes contribute to immune evasion. He employs synthetic virology to study the impact of coding biases in viruses on replication and the detection by the innate immune system. Additionally, Daniel is involved with the Microbiology Society, advocating for the creation of inclusive spaces for LGBTQ scientists in STEM.
