Dr. Daniel Grimley

Biography

Daniel Grimley is a Professor of Music at the University of Oxford and a Professorial Fellow at Merton College. He has been appointed as Head of the Humanities Division since January 2022, where he provides strategic leadership encompassing research, teaching, and governance. His research centers on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century music, with a specific focus on the works of composers from Scandinavia, such as Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius. Grimley has authored four monographs and edited multiple volumes, contributing significantly to the understanding of music's relationship with landscape and identity. His recent work includes a biography of Sibelius that has garnered critical acclaim. He has also been involved in interdisciplinary research projects and is a leading figure in promoting musicological scholarship through various editorial capacities. Through his academic endeavors, Grimley has firmly established himself as an authority in the fields of music theory and history, particularly concerning the integration of environmental and cultural contexts in music.
