Biography

Daniel E. Hastings is the Cecil (1923) Ida Green Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has a diverse background in laser material interactions, fusion plasma physics, spacecraft plasma environment interactions, and space plasma thrusters. Hastings received his B.A. from Oxford University in 1976, followed by an S.M. and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978 and 1980, respectively. He has held numerous positions at MIT, including Associate Department Head for Research and Dean of Undergraduate Education. As an involved member of various advisory boards and councils, Hastings has contributed significantly to the field of space technology and policy. He has received multiple awards for his service, including being named an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2021, and has served on various committees and boards related to engineering and aerospace. Hastings is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the academic community.
