Dr. Daniel Herwitz

Biography

Daniel Herwitz is a dedicated academic in the field of philosophy, holding the position of Frederick G. L. Huetwell Professor at the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1984 and has been teaching at the University of Michigan since 2002. His tenure includes serving as the Director of the Institute for the Humanities from 2002 to 2012. Herwitz has earned recognition for his scholarly contributions, winning the National Book Award in India for his work on art and aesthetics. He has been a Mellon Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center and has had a prestigious appointment as an Andrew Mellon Visiting Scholar at the University of Cape Town. Additionally, he was invited as a Fellow at the Australian National University in 2013. His research interests focus on aesthetics, film, and philosophical essays, particularly in relation to literature, memory, and trauma. He teaches graduate seminars that explore the intersections of literature and the arts, as well as the study of contemporary culture and politics. Herwitz's engagement with languages includes a reading knowledge of German and French, further supporting his diverse academic focus and interests.
