Dr. Daniel Inman

Biography

Daniel J. Inman is a prominent figure in the field of Aerospace Engineering, currently serving as the Harm Buning Collegiate Professor and Chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. He holds a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University. With over 40 years of academic experience, Inman has directed the Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures and has held various academic positions, including the G.R. Goodson Professorship at Virginia Tech and Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has an extensive publication record, with 422 journal papers and 687 proceedings papers. Inman has been recognized with numerous awards, including the ASME Adaptive Structures Award and the AIAA Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Award. His research interests lie in applying smart materials to address aerospace engineering challenges, focusing on energy harvesting, structural health monitoring, and vibration suppression. Inman is also a fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and has served as Editor-in-Chief for various journals related to intelligent material systems and vibrations. He has taught various courses, including Introduction to Aerospace Structures and Structural Dynamics, and has supervised a significant number of PhD and MS students throughout his career.
