Biography

Daniel S. Kessler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Developmental Biology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the mechanisms underlying the establishment and organization of primary germ layers during vertebrate development, particularly through the study of signaling and transcriptional networks in embryos of Xenopus and zebrafish. Key areas of interest include the formation and function of the Spemann organizer, axial development, and the regulation of cellular responses to inductive signals such as TGFß and Nodal. Kessler employs a variety of biochemical, molecular, genomic, and embryological techniques to address fundamental questions regarding transcriptional regulatory pathways and the roles of specific genes in the development of major embryonic cell lineages.
