Biography
Daniel Laskarin currently teaches sculpture at the University of Victoria, with past offerings that have included Drawing, Colour, and 3D Studio. He has also taught history and theory courses in Fine Performing Arts at Simon Fraser University's School of Contemporary Arts. Laskarin received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles and holds a BA in Fine Performing Arts from Simon Fraser University. His art practice is object-based, with a focus on materiality and conceptual depth, encompassing sculpture, photography, optics, robotics, installation, sound projection, set design, and large-scale public commissions across Vancouver, Seattle, and Richmond, BC. In his current work, he utilizes photogrammetry to create 3D CAD models of abandoned sites, developing images and sculptures that address themes of ruin and reclamation, along with conveying a sense of the unknown and precarious possibilities. His work crosses disciplinary boundaries, unified by a deep interest in the relationship between perception, consciousness, and bodily experience. Laskarin has exhibited his work throughout North and South America, Europe, and Africa, and is part of various national and international public collections. His recent project, "Sunday Afternoon," consists of a series of casual neighborhood events designed to examine institutional conditions and the hopeful possibilities within fractured contexts.
