Biography

Professor Daniel J. Leahy chairs the largest department at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Natural Sciences, the Department of Molecular Biosciences. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cell signaling, specifically examining the processes by which proteins and molecules behave in living systems and the molecular mechanisms that regulate growth in normal and malignant cells. His work on the family of signaling molecules, including the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), has demonstrated how these molecules function in both healthy individuals and those with cancer. This research has influenced strategies among medical professionals for treating various cancers, including lung, breast, colon, and gastric cancers. Since joining UT Austin in 2016, he was previously a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University from 1993 to 2015. The Leahy Lab studies how living cells monitor and respond to their environment by detecting interactions between cell-surface receptors and their ligands. They utilize biochemical and X-ray crystallographic methods to study the active components of receptors and ligands.
